Kat's Secrets to Happiness:

I'm available for commencement ceremonies and bar mitzvahs.

  1. Hope for everything but expect nothing; you can never be disappointed only pleasantly surprised. Preserve every good experience and discard every bad one once you've extracted the life lesson. Happiness is an active choice you make every day, not an accomplishment.
  2. Taste life. Every moment is an experience. Every vantage point is a photograph. Make plans. WRITE A BUCKET LIST and update it regularly as things occur to you.
  3. Covet people. Every person that crosses your path is a glimpse into another way to live that can improve yours. Network not just for professional reasons but personal ones as well. They tend to intermingle. The world is small. Pour your resources into people before anything else. Maintain old relationships worth maintaining, however infrequently you are able to. Trust when it's toughest to do so. Give 5+ compliments for every complaint. Volunteer.
  4. Travel as often as you can as far as you can to new places that are as different as possible from the world you already know. Bring a camera and someone you're likely to keep contact with enough to share a "remember when..." with later. Splurge on tickets over new purses. Eat local. Seek musical/theatrical/religious performances or celebrations that tell the story of the place you're in.
  5. Never stop investing in your mind. Whether it's school or a hobby, educate yourself. (Man, I need to learn how to cook.)
  6. Prioritize your looks. Even if you're staying home, do your hair and makeup every day. Wear clothes that make you feel fantastic. Eat well and work out. Take a bike instead of a taxi, the stairs instead of the elevator. Not only will you feel better but you'll see far more.
  7. Eat chocolate lady fingers.
God, family, self, friends, opportunities, material things. In that order.
